Between college and grad school I backpacked all over Europe staying at hostels mostly. I always felt safe. I’m going to register on their site this evening, I think it would be a great way to have my kids meet people from different cultures. I don’t think I would want to travel with my two kids that way though. Kids can be a handful, especially while traveling.

Our son is a member of Couchsurfing.org. He has traveled extensively and had good luck with all his stays. He has urged my wife and I to try it. However, as yet we have not.
