For those who’ve been with me for awhile you probably remember that Gizmo finally came home from the ICU a week ago now. He’s steadily making progress. It’s slow, but it’s happening. The day after he got home, he lost a couple of teeth. Funny how almost starving and dehydrating to death will do that to do a body.
Before the incident, all of our pack usually ate the primo dry food from Costco. Everybody was happy with it; and it could be bought at a reasonable price in 40 lb bags. Not to mention Nate picks it up for us when he’s doing a big shopping there and usually just drops it by here since we live so close. But I digress….
Since Gizmo lost those teeth I thought perhaps that dry kibble might be more difficult for him to eat. So I started looking around for an alternative and came across this- It’s called Red Barn Beef Formula. The label states that it’s over 69% pure beef, beef lung and liver. No corn, soy or beets. They need less of it, so they poop less. Not that cleaning up after Giz has been a huge problem anyway.
I had seen dog food in a chub before; but it had always been at a Petsmart type place and always refrigerated. This was just sitting on a shelf at Tractor Supply Co. You know who had decided we needed to go there to “check things out”. And no, we don’t have a tractor; but why would that matter to Doug?
For once I was happy that he’d made a stop that I’d deemed totally unnecessary. I was intrigued and decided to get a roll for Gizmo. It’s $5 a roll. However since Gizmo, is under 10 lbs, it said to give him between 1/4″ and 1″ per day. A roll will last him over 10 days I calculated. But would he eat it?
OMG! This stuff should actually be labeled Crack for Dogs!
I’ve never seen anything like it! The entire pack went nutso when I opened it. And the nice thing is that you can cut through the package easily with a big knife and once opened you don’t have that God awful canned pet food smell left in your frig. I just put a piece of foil over the end, put it back in the frig and it’s good to go. Sadly, I cannot afford to keep all 5 on it right now. If I could, I would. So it’s just Gizmo that has it for his main food every day.
I use small slivers of it to get the rest to comply with whatever I want. They see me slicing tiny pieces of it and go to their crates, just waiting for it. I’m telling you, if I ever get enough of this I could control every dog in the world. And then if they had opposable thumbs, I’d be set.
This is some good shit. Plus your furry one isn’t left with canned dog food breath. (Doug says it smells like ham). Gizmo is thriving on it.
Anyway, just wanted to share the discovery of a great product. I’m not sure if cats could eat it too. If you’re a cat person you might ask your vet or call the company.
BTW- I’ll have a big post with new photos of Giz soon.

I feed my dog something very similar and it is a miracle food. No doggy breath, no particular odor from the end product deposits in the yard. A real blessing since Geraldine is at the opposite end of the size spectrum from Gizmo.

This stuff is great! Who knew? What kind of dog is Geraldine? BTW- What did you do for the Census?
Geraldine is a Cane Corso (mostly) Italian Mastiff, 85 pounds of affection. I was a crew leader for NRFU, NRFU-VDC and NRFU-RES

I’ve seen those dogs before. They are ginormous! I always wanted a giant breed dog, but never have had one. I bet you don’t get much of the bed.
You need to get ahold of the company that makes it and tell them you will do a review for a years supply. voila

Now, that’s a great idea! Thanks for that Donna, BTW- Love your flip-offs this week.
I was just telling Jim about this, but we don’t have a Tractor Supply anywhere near us. I told him to look around, you never know who else might have something like it.
You can order it mail order kiddo straight from Red Barn, probably from TSC as well. Or if you’d prefer, we can get it for you here and ship it to you for your tiny terror.
Actually, I don’t think the Tiny Terror deserves anything that sounds like something other dogs love. She’s the *fussiest* eater, and the vet said the worst thing you can do with one of those is change their foods around trying to entice them with something new. It just make them even fussier.
So what does Jim do? (Cuz she’s his “little girl” and total shadow, you know.) He keeps buying her different kinds of dry food, and now he’s started buying her CANNED FOOD. I’ve never fed one single animal in my whole life anything but dry food, and they didn’t even know they might be missing out on anything.
The Tiny Terror ate the canned stuff like a pig for about 3 weeks, and then she decided that was old stuff, too. (I am now rolling my eyeballs wildly over the fact that Jim will apparently never learn.) If she gets hungry she’ll eat – probably before she actually STARVES. Duh. (That was for Jim.)
I’m assuming you must be able to brush her teeth, or Jim would’ve never started her on “wet” food that’s so sticky. With Gizmo and Little Bit being under 10 lbs. each, I’ve always been encourages feed them dry food in an attempt to keep their teeth clean! LB’s breath can stop a clock! However, our vet said that Pom’s are known for that!
Sad about Gizmo’s teeth but SO happy he is getting better! Great find, it sounds like. We’re between dogs right now (our beloved Jack has been gone for three years now and we just haven’t been able to commit again yet…) but will pass this info on to my sister with five dogs – who actually shops at a tractor store (!) in Northern California. Maybe they have the Red Barn Beef Formula at her tractor store. (and she doesn’t have a tractor either btw).
Hi Deedee. Thanks for caring about Giz. I’m sorry about your Jack. If your sister has pups on the smaller side or oodles of money, I’d really recommend this stuff. It has done wonders for Gizmo.
Michele, I am glad that Gizmo is doing better. Also glad that Doug dragged you to TSC. I am looking forward to the new photos of Giz.
Magnolia
Me too, me too Miss Magnolia. I will be posting photos of Gizmo and his furry family this week I promise.
Hey, I am so glad to hear that Gizmo is doing better! This new miracle food sounds like just the thing but my little piggie would have me broke in no time…

To be honest I probably would’ve never picked it up if he hadn’t been so sick recently; but paying for that is small change compared to everything else that’s been money well spent.
Michele – Please tell me you have brought charges against the person who was supposed to be caring for your pets when you were gone. I am so happy to hear that everyone is doing well and thriving again, but it makes me crazy to think that person gets off scott-free.
i’m looking forward to seeing the pictures too. :)
Michele
Hi Michele. I did file an incident report with the Houston SPCA. I am awaiting their response. It makes me crazy as well to think she could actually get away with this. However, Doug has told me I should just focus on everyone’s recovery. He has a much “bigger” view of life than I. (Karma will settle it all.) I’d prefer a more “hands-on” approach. However, Evelyn keeps saying that I’d be the one in jail then. She’s probably right. But still…
BTW- Thanks for all your concern. All my friends like you have really help all of us get through this, especially our furry ones.
