At this time yesterday I was “girding up my loins”, so to speak, for a potentially ugly discussion with my significant other, Doug. We were scheduled to go to an event yesterday morning. That’s true. However, there was a 80% of thunderstorms predicted and we have a car problem. Also, the event was being held on the water which always make it more likely to rain. Doug knew how I felt. There was no way I wanted to drive 70 miles, work in the bad weather- assuming that anyone even showed, and then hang out while it rained. I’m getting older and I guess I’m turning into a prima donna. That’s OK, I’m allowed.

When Doug walked in the door I could see from his face that he’d made a decision. Luckily, it was one I could get agree with. I’m at a point in my life where I just don’t enjoy a good argument like I used to. We would stay here today and go to the event tomorrow. (If we were going to have a car problem at least it wouldn’t be in the rain). I could tell that he still really wanted us to go on Saturday. However, for the sake of keeping peace in the house he decided to compromise. Even five years ago, he wouldn’t have done that and we would’ve wound up having a somewhat heated discussion.

So instead we stayed home- or I should say I stayed home. He ran errands and got everything ready for tomorrow. When he’s out I have a chance to surreptitiously grab stuff that we haven’t used, is partially broken, or hopelessly out of fashion, i.e., stone washed jeans, and stick it in a bag to give away). I stuffed six bags yesterday! It probably doesn’t sound like much. However, every little bit helps. Now I only have about 250 more bags of junk that I need to get rid of. (Since Doug is going to Dallas again on Monday I’ll have a chance to do just that). Anyway, while doing that, I worked around the house like my life depended on it. I got a lot of stuff done-all that stuff you only do every so often- wiping the top of door frames and baseboards, cleaning switch plates and louvers. I got rid of the cobwebs up high; quite a job since the ceiling in the den is 17 ‘.

Since the show is so far away, I’d better pop in the shower so we can get going. We’re supposed to be set up ready to go by 11am. However, very few people ever show up before noon on Sunday- usually after 1pm, with people either choosing to sleep in or attending services of some kind, having lunch then coming out. I’m taking Julie and Julia with me today to read just in case the show is a bust. I hope everybody who doesn’t have to work today has a good Sunday. I’m jealous. Today’s trivia answer: 45 minutes.

The SE Texas coast has a low pressure system nearby. That low is going to suck up water, bring it onshore and dump it on our heads. I really like the rain and God knows this area has needed it all summer. My grass actually has a greenish tinge to it now, instead of looking like a giant field of shredded wheat. There is a high probability of a storm today and not just in the sky.

We are scheduled to work an event today in Kemah. Kemah is 75 miles SE of Katy where I live. It sits directly on the water. The event is at the Kemah Boardwalk. It is a children’s festival. In the past we’ve done very well there. However, since last year when we did it last, my hands have really crapped out, face painting wise, and the Boardwalk saw how much we were making on the sand art, so they are doing it themselves now. So our biggest two money makers are out. I also just found out that they’re letting the Mad scientist bring spin art. Another thing we did last time. That leaves us with only candle making.

When the kids make a candle they pour tiny wax beads into a small glass, then we insert the wick and melt the wax with a torch to seal the top. It doesn’t work well in wind and wet. Anyway, Doug got up early to get everything loaded in the Taurus so we could go. I just got a call from Brett who’s with him. He said it is his dad’s plan to drop us there to work the event, while he comes back to Houston to continue renovations on a house that he’s almost done with. The minute Brett heard the plan he called me to clue me in. All I said was “I don’t think so.” He yelled over to Doug. “Mom said you plan sucks ***”. Did I mention that this event is outside? We would be under a small tent exposed to the elements. Been there, done that.

I understand wanting to make the money at the event. If there was any to make. My point is that not many parents are going to drive all the way from Houston (50 miles) with horrid weather predicted. Usually Doug and I get along really well. Even if we don’t see eye-to-eye on everything we can meet somewhere in the middle where we can both handle the compromise. I get a feeling that today, not so much. Doug should be back here soon. Wish me luck. Today’s trivia answer-6 inches.
